Leaving Andhra Pradesh for Goa means a state permit. Whether you pay it depends on the fare you pick: a toll-included fare has it inside, and nothing is collected at the border; the cheaper fare leaves it out, and it is handed over at the checkpost. The amount is set by Goa, not by us, and the receipt is theirs.

A round trip here is billed by the day, not the kilometre

A return journey is charged for at least 300 km per day, because the car stays with you for the whole trip rather than picking up another fare. This route is 365 km each way, so 730 km of driving over 3 days is still billed as 900 km. On a short trip that floor is most of the fare, and two one-way journeys can work out cheaper — worth comparing both before you book.

The Chorla ghat

The road between Goa and Belagavi crosses the Chorla ghat, a forested hill road. In the monsoon it is often in cloud and slow; drive it in daylight if you can.

Gokarna town or the beaches

The drive follows the coast highway through Karwar into Karnataka. The beaches most people stay at, Kudle and Om, are reached by a separate narrow road from Gokarna town, so give your stay's exact name when you book.

Candolim, Calangute, Baga and Anjuna — the busy, built-up stretch.

The south beaches

Colva, Benaulim, Palolem — quieter, wider, further apart.

Worth knowing before you go

  • North and south are an hour or more apart by road — pick one to stay in rather than crossing daily.
  • Old Goa's churches are a group, inland from the beaches, and are best done in one trip.
  • Dudhsagar is inside Bhagwan Mahaveer sanctuary and the last stretch is not by private car.
